Mallacoota & District Historical Society Inc.

Since the formation of the Mallacoota & District Historical Society in 1974, members have researched local history and collected a substantial quantity of documentation in the process. This is currently being arranged into an archival collection.

The society is an incorporated association with an ABN:74 787 014 200. Its mission statement is here.

Our local history collection and research area includes the localities of Genoa, Gipsy Point Mallacoota, Wangarabell, Wallagaraugh, and Gabo Island.

Mallacoota WWII Bunker Museum

The restoration of this heritage building was commenced in 2002, originally as a project of the Mallacoota R&SL Sub-branch members. The Mallacoota and District Historical Society now undertakes the ongoing development, management and interpretation of the site and collections to preserve the region’s local and WWII history.

Our local history museums are volunteer operated facilities – new members and volunteers are always welcome.

Our Heritage Resource Centre

consists of a library, files and research facilities with a collection relating to the local history of Mallacoota and district, and some WWII military history.  To avoid disappointment, please phone to confirm availability of a volunteer to assist.

Genoa School Museum

Located at Princes Highway, Genoa, Victoria

Open 2-4 pm on  Thursdays – Contact : Annette 03 5158 8253

Genoa was once a vital link between the burgeoning communities of Mallacoota, Timbilica, Yambulla, Nungatta, Wangarabelle and Wallagaraugh. Indeed Old Genore was being used as a cattle run as early as 1835 and is one of the oldest settlements in Victoria. The first Genoa school opened in 1891 and the current school building was opened in 1953 and closed in 1990. Many of the early records are still on hand.

The Genoa museum endeavours to celebrate both its rich Bidwell-Maap Aboriginal history and European settlement.
